At Halton Region, we are committed to keeping Halton a great place to live. As we begin another new year, I want to take few moments to reflect on our 2014 accomplishments.
To begin with, as part of Regional Council’s commitment to ensure Halton remains economically strong, we approved a Development Financing Plan that ensures growth pays for itself, launched the “Advocating for a Strong Halton” program, and increased our investment in infrastructure to expand and improve Regional roads.
As well, since 2010, the number of businesses in the Region has increased by 18%. We have created an Action Plan that sets the direction for Halton’s agri-tourism efforts to attract more tourists to rural communities, and we have successfully maintained our AAA credit rating.
Halton Region also continues to support important community programs, services and initiatives that enhance the wellbeing of all residents. Since 2007, the Region achieved an increase in 894 affordable/assisted housing units and approved an updated Comprehensive Housing Strategy for delivering affordable and assisted housing in partnership with the Provincial and Federal governments.
Council invested in additional subsidized childcare spaces and paramedics to ensure the Region continues to meet the needs of the community.
In terms of sustainability, the Region continues to have one of the highest waste diversion rates in Ontario and 50% of the Region remains in the natural heritage system.
I look forward to working together with the new Regional Council, staff and the community as we continue to work to enhance the quality of life for all, today and into the future. Happy New Year!
