Last week I had the honour of attending the grand opening of the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre on Lakeshore Road in Burlington. This brand new facility is proudly supported by Halton’s Physician Recruitment program and is also a result of the 2009 Halton McMaster partnership which saw Halton Region and the City of Burlington provide ten-year funding to McMaster University to help establish a variety of programs in the region.
Attracting new physicians to Halton continues to be a top priority for Regional Council. In 2002, the Region launched the Physician Recruitment Initiative, a comprehensive and coordinated Halton-wide promotion and retention strategy to address the growing need for family physicians throughout the community. The recruitment program aims to address both current physician needs and the needs of the future by working with all four Local Municipalities, local hospitals, clinics and community representatives with the goal of providing a family doctor for every resident of Halton.
For over a decade, through the Physician Recruitment Initiative, Halton’s Physician Recruitment Coordinator has actively marketed Halton to prospective physicians and worked with existing physicians to ensure a strong family medicine presence in the community. Since its inception, the Physician Recruitment program has helped bring more than 200 new family doctors to the Halton community.
The beautiful new facility will be shared by Joseph Brant Hospital and McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine to provide full access to comfortable, quality health care for up to 10,000 patients annually in our community. Having access to a family doctor helps ensure effective health care and contributes to the high quality of life our residents enjoy. The Halton McMaster Family Health Centre will act as McMaster’s teaching hub in Halton Region, introducing family medicine residents, medical students, nursing students and more to the City of Burlington and the communities of Halton.
Responsive to our citizen’s changing needs, Halton Region strives to enhance the safety and health of our residents through our programs and services. On behalf of Regional Council, I would like to thank McMaster University and all the physicians who choose to make Halton home to their practice. By improving access to healthcare in our region, you continue to help make Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
