On Friday, June 22, 2012, I had the pleasure of attending the first Breakfast with the Mayors event of the year in Oakville, hosted by the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC). Every year, HIEC hosts two semi-annual events to celebrate community collaboration, innovation, local business and education.
The June breakfast focused on the importance of leadership and included a keynote presentation from Drew Dudley, Director and Founder of Nuance Leadership Development Services Inc. Students, parents, educators and business/industry representatives were invited to attend the event to learn more about many of the successful programs and initiatives in our community and also about how to enhance career education.
Over the last 22 years, HIEC has successfully played an important role in a variety of regional events and initiatives. We are very fortunate in Halton to have the support of HIEC as they continue to help promote the creation of partnerships between industry, education and the community throughout the Region. HIEC is a great partner of the Region’s Small Business Centre and is currently assisting in the execution of our renewed youth entrepreneurship program with secondary schools that includes educational training and the introduction of a youth business conference scheduled for November of this year.
Regional Council is committed to the economic growth and sustainability of Halton Region. This commitment is reflected in The Citizen’s Priorities – Halton Region’s 2011 – 2014 Action Plan through two of our key initiatives: Attracting and Retaining Jobs and Creating Community Partnerships. One of the first action items of the plan was to create a new Economic Development strategy, and on December 14, 2011, Regional Council approved a new ten-year Implementation Plan. We hope that through this implementation plan and with our continued partnerships with organizations like HIEC, Halton will continue to be a preferred location for innovative businesses and entrepreneurs.
